Ebook About
On June 25, 1989, the naked corpse of schoolteacher Susan Reinert was found wedged into her hatchback car in a hotel parking lot near Philadelphia's "Main Line."  Her two children had vanished.  The Main Line Murder Case burst upon the headlines--and wasn't resolved for seven years.  Now, master crime writer Joseph Wambaugh reconstructs the case from its roots, recounting the details, drama, players and pawns in this bizarre crime that shocked the nation and tore apart a respectable suburban town.  The massive FBI and state police investigation ultimately centered on two men.  Dr. Jay C. Smith--By day he was principal of Upper Merion High School where Susan Reinert taught.  At night he was a sadist who indulged in porno, drugs, and weapons.  William Bradfield--He was a bearded and charismatic English teacher and classics scholar, but his real genius was for juggling women--three at a time.  One of those women was Susan Reinert.  How these two men are connected, how the brilliant murder was carried off, and how the investigators closed this astounding case makes for Wambaugh's most compelling book yet.

Book Echoes in the Darkness Review :

Creepy book details the 1970s main line murder case in Pennsylvania. No shortage of scumbags and weirdos here, that's for sure. The murders themselves (a woman and 2 kids) are nestled within a jaw-droppingly convoluted confidence scheme orchestrated by a Svengali-like prep school teacher whose friends are closer to minions. He's like the second coming of Charles Manson. The principal of this prep school is sort of a cross between G. Gordon Liddy and Lucifer. He spends his office hours dissolving body parts in acid and making homemade silencers for handguns. On weekends, he breaks into cars and holds up Brinks trucks. Honestly, if this was fiction, no one would believe it for two seconds. It's that outlandish. There are truly vile people on display here and some obvious deals with devils were struck by scumbag attorneys. Rachel, for example (Joanne Aitken in real life) Bill Bradfield's frigid little goth queen through all of this, is a truly odious and smug presence and there is ample evidence she was fully involved in the murder. Wherever she is now, I can only hope she is sucking in some of the misery she willfully helped blow out.The first half of this book is fantastic. Every page brings some bizarre new revelation that spins the plot in a new direction. Second half bogs down a little. But its still a fascinating, albeit slightly repellent read.
This story is fascinating and you will not be able to put the book down. A naive teacher falls for a diabolical manipulator who is also an English teacher. The diabolical manipulator convinces her to make him the beneficiary of a $750,000 life insurance policy. Then she turns up dead, and her children are missing. If Wambaugh got the story correct, the creepy school principal committed the murder. But, not so fast. Turns out there is much more to the story. Pair this book with another book, Principal Suspect, to get another side of the story. The players in this story are long gone, and one may never know who actually committed the murders.
